Sports cars have been spotted testing the new 200km 'open speed' section of the Stuart Highway after the Northern Territory government commenced a year long trial on 1 February. The Country Liberal government has been criticised by the NT opposition, the Police Association, the Automobile Association, peak medical bodies and engineers after instigating the trial between Alice Springs and Barrow Creek. Engineers Australia's Northern Division president, Jaswant Deo, said that he was disappointed the government did not consult with EA on the capacity of the road and indeed ordinary vehicles to withstand potentially high speeds.
