Inquiry to investigate Gladstone bund wall failure

Federal environment minister Greg Hunt has initiated an independent Commission of Inquiry that will investigate Australia's largest dredging project in Gladstone Harbour and the failure of a bund wall that was designed to retain dredging spoils from the $35 billion Curtis Island liquefied natural gas (LNG) works, host to four separate joint ventures involving Santos Petronas, British Gas, Total, Kogas, Conoco-Phillips, Origin Energy and Sinopec. The wall began leaking in August 2011 and coincided with mass deaths and disease of marine life in the nearby Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Hunt has declared, "it is absolutely clear that there was a failure in the bund wall of significant proportions."
