Both the Supply of Machinery Regulations, which are aimed at suppliers, and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), which concern pre 1995 existing and installed machinery, contain requirements to which machinery must comply where relevant. The list in the Machinery Regulations is in the form of Essential Health and Safety Requirements (ESHRs). These same ESHRs can be used as the basis to achieve safety compliance for machines installed before 1995, although their application is not compulsory. In the event of this approach being adopted the user of the machine is able to set aside some of the PUWER regulations.
