New types of sensors that can withstand incredible levels of pressure and heat are helping researchers to develop buildings that could be proof against terrorists, an international conference was told last month. Professor Julian Jones from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland told the Institute of Physics conference in Warwick that the sensors, based on fibre optics, would have applications in power generation, for air and sea guidance systems and in food safety and medicine.
