Design optimization is becoming increasingly important to structural engineers. This paper presents an integrated design optimization combining the mechanism method with genetic algorithms. The former is currently one of the principal arch assessment tools adopted by the Department of Transport; the latter are powerful numerical function optimization techniques. Trials showing results from Test on Bridge, Kent and a range of other sample optimal arch designs are presented with associated algorithm efficiency data. The method is proposed as a design aid for structural engineers involved in the assessment, maintenance and repair of existing Bridges, or the design or new arches.
