When Adam Smith published The Wealth of Nations in 1 776, he could never have imagined what would be done with the phrase "invisible hand," which appears but once in the entire work. A professor of moral philoso phy, he retained an acute sense of the human costs of what that phrase symbolized. Nor did he hesitate to propose measures for ameliorating those costs.
