If growth of the U.S. Green Buildings Council is any indication, the sustainable building industry has moved beyond fringe and is headed toward mainstream. Membership in the 10-year-old Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization, which is working to promote the construction of environmentally responsible buildings, has skyrocketed in the last few years. At the end of 1999 USGBC had 250 member organizations and companies. It now has 3,500 members, more than two-thirds of which have joined in the last two years, according to Christine Ervin, USGBC president and CEO.
