The Underground Heavy Construction Industry in 2010 and 2011: Activity Regardless of Stimulus Funds

Our industry has survived the recession reasonably well, as we went into the late 2008 economic recession with a strong backlog of funded major tunnel programs such as New York City's MTA East Side Access, Second Avenue, and Number-7 subway-expansion programs, the New Jersey Transit ARC Program consisting of 4 major tunnel projects, the Sound Transit University link Program in Seatde, the Caltrans Devils Slide and Caldecott Highway Tunnels,rnand other tunnel-infrastructure projects. Calendar year 2009 was a busy year for all sectors of the underground business-owners, design engineers, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers. The prices for commodity products may have weakened slighdy due to the overall slowdown in construction but most specialty suppliers were able to maintain their pricing structures and associated margins in 2009. Funds from The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), signed into law in February 2009, had minimal impact on our industry in 2009.
