When starting out in engineering as a hobby and whilst still being on apprentice pay, one has to buy a machine that suits the depth of his or her pocket. With this in mind whilst on the grand sum of five pounds a week my first lathe was an Emco Unimat SL, which was later replaced by the Unimat 3 when these were introduced. Two things these machine teach you are one, that the tool needs sharpening and secondly that the standard engineering marking out equipment does not fit the diminutive cross slide.
