A fixed steady is supplied as standard with the Warco BH600 lathes, but as is often the case with the sort of work undertaken by model engineers, its capacity can be rather too small. A fixed steady is used to support work that is too long or too large in diameter to go into the chuck or through the hole in the lathe headstock mandrel. The steady supplied will just about take something of 90mm diameter, but I have quite often needed more. I had a job coming up for a number of columns that were well over this size, so decided to make one somewhat larger in capacity; I went for an inside frame diameter of 200mm.
