Professor Graham Richards CBE is chairman of chemistry at the University of Oxford. His career has three major threads: academic recognition, commercial success and computers. He is now weaving these threads together, using the public's spare computing power to help his search for cancer cures, and the venture capital community to commercialise any drugs that may emerge from the search. His career mirrors the changing balance of power in some British universities, from the arts to the sciences and from an ivory tower approach to research to today's increasing interest in its commercialisation.
