A NEW FRONTIER

The so-called creative industries are emerging as the critical battlegrounds for the new economy and wealth-creating society of the future. Because of rapidly increasing technological advances, engineering has a key role to play as never before. However, there are concerns about the numbers, quality and creative preparation of the future engineering professionals and there is much to be gained from strengthening the communication bridge between the engineering and the creative arts. The engineering profession itself, with a critical role to play in a changing knowledge-based economy, faces problems of recruitment, change and future direction. This article suggests some ideas on the way ahead.
