There can't be many research and development organisations that exist because of a Royal Charter. But the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the UK's public service broadcaster, has been doing fundamental research and development for more than 70 years to fulfil a Royal Charter that defines its existence. BBC R&D has had a hand in some of the key developments in UK, European and global radio and TV broadcasting. It has also developed technologies that helped film makers embrace rather than reject what was, at launch, the competitive medium of TV And BBC R&D has been critical to planning the use of an increasingly precious resource - radio frequency spectrum.
