TIME TO CHANGE DIRECTION?

The UK's electricity supply industry was privatised on 31 March 1990 when 12 Area Boards in England and Wales became 12 Regional Electricity Companies. Distribution in Scotland and Northern Ireland was at the same time vested in three vertically integrated supply companies - two in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland. At privatisation there were therefore some 15 significant end user purchasers of electricity distribution equipment in the UK and two off-shore island users with more modest requirements. Distribution services contractors (the hole diggers, cable layers and others) purchased the same materials for their contracts on their own account if they weren't required to use their clients' own supply arrangements but the principal players were undoubtedly the 15 regional distribution companies.
