Customs duty can be a significant additional cost when importing goods into the European Union (EU). Duty rates on electronic goods can be as high as 14%, yet many importers are content to leave their duty calculation to their freight agent. As a result, many importers are artuaEy unaware of the amount they are paying. The decision to outsource this function is largely due to the fact that there is little or no in-house expertise in this area. Furthermore, importers would prefer to pay for the entire import package and not have to worry about individual aspects of the movement, which may only serve to slow the process down. This is despite the fact that they are wholly liable for all aspects of the import declaration process.
