Many of the calculations, methods, and tools discussed in this column are based on the use of bin data. Bin data is available in a number of different formats from a number of sources. Some sources are more reliable and provide for more accurate results than others. So it's important to know the source so that you and your client can feel comfortable with your results. It's also important to understand how to best apply the data in order to minimize the amount of potential error associated with it. In the old days (remember that old Air Force manual?), "normal" bin data was provided in 5° dry bulb bins with the mean coincident wet bulb (MCWB) temperature associated with each bin. For example, the first bin of 0℉ to 5° may include 10 readings with a MCWB of 1.9°, the second bin of 5° to 10° may be 12 readings with a MCWB of 5.5°, and so on.
