Engineer Leader Development Through the Eisenhower Leader Development Program

With all of the tools, technology, and equipment at the disposal of Army engineer leaders, successful mission and project accomplishment ultimately depend on the ability of leaders to influence, motivate, and lead people. For today's engineer leader, developing the capacity to influence people and change organizations is just as important as understanding the careful calculations of demolitions or the bearing capacity of soil. Various graduate programs available through the Army Advanced Civil Schooling offer curricula that focus on the intellectual development of leadership and managerial practices. Specifically, the study of organizational development provides ancillary benefits for leader development. A similar alternative route to Advanced Civil Schooling is the Eisenhower Leader Development Program (ELDP) offered by the U.S. Military Academy-West Point, New York, to incoming tactical officers. ELDP offers a master of arts degree in organizational psychology from Columbia University; the program focuses on the processes and qualities of effective organizations and on the development of their leaders.
