Lines of Engineer Support: A Guide for Success in Any Situation

Downed-aircraft recovery is an aviation term used to describe a specific mission performed by the aviation community in the unfortunate event of a downed aircraft. Typically, an engineer would not discuss such a misfortune and such a mission with the engineer community. However, as the commander of Headquarters Support Company, 404th Aviation Support Battalion, I provided recommendations and advice to the battalion commander based on the four lines of engineer support. Field Manual 3-34, Engineer Operations, explains how (not what) to think about exploiting the capabilities of the Engineer Regiment in support of military operations. It describes how engineers combine the skills and organizations of the three interrelated engineer disciplines (combat, general, and geospatial engineering) to provide support that helps ground force commanders- 1. Assure mobility. 2. Enhance protection. 3. Enable force projection and logistics. 4. Build partner capacity and develop infrastructure among populations and nations.
