Asignificant update to engineer doctrine, Army Techniques Publication (ATP) 3-34.20, Countering Explosive Hazards (formerly known as Field Manual 3-34.210, Explosive Hazard Operations), was published in January 2016. The field manual was identified as having significant issues in effectively describing how combat engineers counter explosive hazards while supporting mobility. Therefore, a team of subject matter experts within the Engineer Regiment, and representatives from across the Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the explosive ordnance disposal communities developed a framework that provides engineer leaders with a more clearly articulated way of describing our craft. ATP 3-34.20 addresses the previous concerns with doctrine by moving toward a narrative that is focused on engineers and their efforts across the range of military operations. This new publication also emphasizes the importance of the Engineer Regiment and force using common, accurate language; providing a terminology hierarchy; and emphasizing the hierarchy throughout the framework. This publication will ultimately impact internal engineer publications and some of those being produced by other branches and Services.
