Industrial Energy Management Success Stories

Industrial facilities present a unique set of challenges to energy managers: equipment is often process specific, the manufacturing process often cannot be altered, and production levels cannot be negatively impacted. Still, large-scale energy efficiency projects can be identified and implemented in these facilities. Such projects tend to result in improved product quality and higher production levels with less energy consumption for the system or facility.This article highlights some success stories from a customized utility program implementer that targets industrial projects with annual savings greater than one million kilowatt-hours (kWh) or 100,000 therms and consistently delivers projects with savings up to ten times the targets. Three best practices are described and illustrated by way of actual project examples that drive an improvement in the energy management of the industrial sector. These best practices touch different components of an energy efficiency project lifecycle including energy auditing, financial decision making, and project design and implementation. Utilizing these techniques delivers high yield energy efficiency projects and gains intimacy and trust between the customer and energy efficiency professional, fostering future projects.
