If you're using cellular modems to communicate between the devices and the cloud normally, you are going to pay air time by the byte (Joel K. Young, "Web services puts M2M in The Cloud," September 2011, www.eetimes. com/4219528). So, I think that web services, with their verbose requests and responses are not very optimized for this situation. Instead a binary protocol like Google's Protobuf using raw TCP/IP communications would be more cost effective.
