In 1991, California's Local Government Commission convened a group of architects interested in neo-traditional designs at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park in California. Among them were Duany, Plater-Zyberk, Corbette and Calthrope. With attorney Steve Weissman, they drafted a set of urban design principles. These call for compact development that frames public spaces rather than scattered siting that merely occupies space.
