摘要

A 50-year-old woman, shopping in a local department store, is riding an escalator that runs from the ground floor to the basement. The store has been open for about a half hour and so far as is known, no other passengers are on the escalator. The woman has on her bifocals, is wearing flat-sole shoes and is carrying a bag over her left shoulder. Her right hand is resting on the handrail. She is standing properly on one of the steps, looking straight ahead, and is about four or five steps from the bottom, a two-step flat run. It is an unremarkable trip until the escalator "stopped suddenly and jerked forward" according to the complaint her attorney prepares and files.
