The Life of Wire Ropes in Elevator Installations

This article surveys well-documented research, known calculations and factors related to the expected life and endurance of wire ropes as well as a relevant example of the key application factors in elevator installations. The magnitude of impact on endurance is surprising (particularly with respect to the very common use of sheave groove profiles using "U" undercuts and "V" grooves in elevators today). The facts strongly illustrate the need to understand these principles and to apply them at the design and application stages, and also at remedial and maintenance levels.
