In response to my recent lectures for the U.K. elevator industry and the subsequent questions raised in regard to rope lubrication, I have put together some frequently asked questions and answers in the hope of clarifying this very important issue (from the rope manufacturers' point of view, at least).rnBefore going into the specific areas, it must be stressed that all steel wire ropes used in a lifting application should be periodically checked for equal tensions and for the level of lubrication present in the ropes. The level of lubrication may vary in certain conditions but, whether used on traction or hydraulic application, lift ropes must have lubrication reapplied if it is found to have dried out, in a controlled manner.
