Success for the PEIs

Two years ago the UK Engineering Council agreed to dismantle its regional structure (the ECROs) and support the establishment by the Institutions of cross-discipline regional activities in its place. This new approach was deemed to be necessary in order to involve the Institutions far more directly in a 'lasting regional relationship' and to provide a strong nationwide focus for engineering. The fifteen PEIs (Professional Engineering Institutions) were formed in early 1997 and in 'handing over the baton', the Engineering Council accepted their role to review the PEI's development and progress. Hence, over the recent months a small group of us, Brian Kent, past President of the IMechE and a Senator of the Engineering Council, Alan Gingell, past Secretary of IEEIE and myself paid a visit to all the PEIs. We were impressed with much of the work we saw and have produced a series of recommendations to help the PEIs progress even further, which will be considered by the Institutions and particularly those that are providing secretarial and management support together with permanent funding for the multitude of joint ventures.
