I prefer to go through appraisals and be metaphorically 'shaken' not 'stirred' rather like the self-assured James Bond prefers his Martinis; that is, I don't mind being challenged by my manager about my performance. After all, we can all do something better and standards are constantly rising; but, I do mind if I am made to feel unnecessarily upset by the process. Clearly, it is difficult not to feel glum if your appraisal rating does not meet your expectation, particularly if it affects your next pay rise and opportunity for career advancement.
