Making integrated chip cards is big business for major smartcard manufacturers, like Gemplus, Schlumberger and De La Rue, who produce a million smartcards per day. Although many of these cards are still for simple telephone applications, the basic manufacturing process for the more sophisticated multi-application cards, such as those using MULTOS (see box 1) is still very similar. These more sophisticated cards are put to work by service providers, such as Mondex International Limited (MXI), a world leader in the provision of smart card-based products and services. MXI is best known for pioneering the Mondex Electronic Cash system, a smart card-based electronic purse. MXI is also responsible for the development of MULTOS, the open, industry standard, multi-application operating system for smartcards.
