Conditional fees and their likely impact

As everyone involved with litigation will be aware, the Lord Chancellor has set in motion the biggest shake-up in the provision of legal aid since the inception of the scheme in 1947. While many of the measures he announced at the Law Society Annual Conference in October 1997 build on proposals of his predecessor, Lord Mackay, and have widespread support, there is one glaring exception. This is his plan to abolish legal aid for civil cases in pursuit of money or damages.
