Smart Card based electricity metering — a new concept

Smart metering is a new concept pioneered by the Tata Power Company Ltd. Strategic Electronics Division. The system employs contactless smart cards using which the meter reader can collect consumption data from smart meters and transfer the same to the system's computer. The energy consumption data read from the meter using a smart card can be transferred to system's computer from the smart card directly or through a handheld terminal carried by the meter reader for generation and issue of bills on the spot.
