The electronics sector is characterised by a large number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) apart from micro enterprises engaged in the assembly of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Manufacture of several other electronic components is also evident in the SMEs. Some of the well-known methods in the fabrication of PCBs include the additive, subtractive and semi-additive methods. The use of fluxes and the soldering process generate several contaminants including greases, rosins and flux activators, etching salts, waxes and par-ticulates. In several instances such cleaning agents as 1,1,1-trichloroe-thane, CTC and CFC-113 are reportedly employed to eliminate the residues and other wastes.
