University of Toronto Innovations Foundation (UTIF) and Norel Optronics Inc. are bringing to market a new generation of Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays that use a nanomaterial known as "fullerene" — a recently discovered form of carbon different from diamond or graphite - that until now has had great promise, but no mass market applications. The nanotech breakthrough was discovered by Professor Zhenghong Lu of the University of Toronto and patented by the University of Toronto Innovations Foundation. It passed an important part of the patent process in September 2004, when the International Searching Authority found no prior publications or patents that could impact the granting of a patent for this invention.
