The elimination of cross border restriction within Europe in the 90s coincided with a significant increase of car thefts. In addition, joy riding and opportunity theft became popular, causing the insurance claims to reach an all time peak. E.g. in Germany the car theft almost tripled within 4 years time, see Figure 1. As a result insurance companies strengthened their demand for effective vehicle theft prevention systems and urged for a rapid introduction of such systems. Vehicle immobilisation rather than vehicle alarm was the system function chosen. Implementations differed from country to country and were either based on Pin Code, Contact Memory or Remote Keyless Entry systems. A contactless data carrier (Transponder) embedded in the vehicle key developed into the preferred technology, since it combined transparent, convenient use by the customer and fail safe operation at the same time. The system became known as Immobiliser. The transponder technology has originally been developed for use in industrial applications, like animal or asset tracking as well as for access control systems.
