With the success of its Pilot project with 50 smart card readers and digital printers, started in August 2009, the Maharashtra transport department now plans to procure another 700 smart cards readers for its 45 Regional Transport Offices in the state in the next six months. The absence of such readers had defeated the objective of issuing smart card driving licences and Vehicle registration cards three years earlier, as RTO officials are unable to register an offence on the cards in the absence of card readers.
