1.64 /spl mu/m pulsed source for a distributed optical fibre Raman temperature sensor

The authors propose a novel source for distributed anti-Stokes Raman temperature sensing. A source generating 8 W, 10 ns pulses at 500 Hz, at /spl lambda/=1.64 /spl mu/m is demonstrated. Operation at 1.64 /spl mu/m enables the temperature dependent anti-Stokes signal at 1.53 /spl mu/m to be generated in the low-loss window, facilitating a long range sensor.
