Measurement of arbitrary strain profiles within fibre gratings

Results from the first measurement of an arbitrary strain field within a fibre Bragg grating are presented. Low coherence reflectometry has been used, together with a wavelength-tunable reference grating, to obtain strain against distance measurements.
