Optical switching in two-mode semiconductor lasers via gain or loss modulation

The authors demonstrate an optical switching mechanism based on two-mode lasers in which bistability does not exist. Both theoretical analysis and experiment show that a small amount of gain or loss modulation is sufficient to cause switching between two oscillating modes.
