40 Gbit/s/spl times/25 ch (1 Tbit/s aggregate capacity) WDM transmission over 342 km of fibre

A successful, error-free 1 Tbit/s (40 Gbit/s/spl times/25 ch) WDM transmission experiment over 342 km of nonzero dispersion (TrueWave) fibre is described in which a 40 Gbit/s optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) transmitter, 3R receiver, and gain-flattened, conventional Er-doped fibre amplifiers are used. Fibre chromatic dispersion was effectively compensated for using negative-slope dispersion compensating fibre.
