Measuring muscle fatigue during exercise is crucial for effective sports training. Muscle oxygen saturation change through hemodynamics measurement is generally used to measure muscle performance as well as accumulated fatigue. The authors proposed a novel measuring device using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure hemodynamics non-invasively via an optical source and receiver. They designed an eight-channel NIRS patch, driven by NIRS application-specific integrated circuit, and validated the measuring performance with the thigh muscles of healthy subjects during isometric exercise. Tomography results showed significant differences in oxy-haemoglobin levels between muscle contraction and relaxation.
