Tracking low-flying insects such as bees has always been a challenge because anything attached to the animal must be light enough so that it does not impede normal flight or behaviour. Jason Lim, a radar engineer at Rothamsted Research in Hertfordshire, UK, explained how the team uses radar to compare the navigation behaviour of healthy honey bees and bumble bees with those infected with gut disease and viruses carried by the parasitic varroa mite.
