THE KABAKOVS' PALACE OF PROJECTS

The Palace of Projects was conceived in 1998 for Round House, an art space in London. Set up by the artist Ilya Kabakov and his wife Emilia, it displays 65 Utopian projects; unfinished artistic models, plans and paintings of the 20th Century. The works are described as "a spiralling succession of tragi-comic proposals to make the world a better place". The Kabakovs' Palace has been compared to Tatlin's Tower. The designs share similarities in shape - the iconic spiral structure - and are both made from wood, steel and plastic. Of course, the obvious difference is that Tatlin's tower remained an idealised concept. It is unknown whether Tatlin inspired the Kabakovs.
