During the earliest days of the Apollo space program, a fire in the Apollo command module killed the three astronauts manning the spacecraft. The fire did not occur in orbit but rather while the spacecraft sat atop the Saturn 5 rocket during a "power-up" test several days before the scheduled launch. Subsequent investigations of the cause of the accident revealed that static electricity in a 100% oxygen environment triggered the blaze. Combustible materials ignited in seconds and created the smoke that suffocated the astronauts.
