Choices in Pb-free solder alloys

When implementing RoHS-compliant electronics production, many choices must be made pertaining to components, circuit boards, and equipment. One of the most important choices is which Pb-free solder alloy(s) to use. Extensive research has shown that no single "drop in" Pb-free solder alloy can be used in place of the tin-lead alloy. Therefore, a great amount of effort has gone into developing and researching Pb-free solders intended to be viable replacements for tin-lead solders. Although each of these alloys has its advantages and disadvantages, some alloys stand out as the most likely replacements for tin-lead.
