EDA HEADS FOR BIG EASY, EYES BIG CHANGES: 'New' Synopsys aims to reshape industry

New Orleans - With the acquisition of Avanti Corp. under its belt, a revitalized Synopsys Inc. will come to this week's Design Automation Conference here with a new vision of itself as the next-generation provider of IC design solutions. But Synopsys faces postmerger challenges related to product overlap, technology integration and a billion-dollar civil suit from Cadence Design Systems Inc. The largest merger in the history of the electronic design automation industry was completed last Thursday, as Synopsys paid roughly $735 million for Avanti in a stock swap. The amount was less than the $830 million figure expected when the merger plans were announced in December, but Synopsys is paying some $100 million in merger-related charges during its next fiscal quarter. Shareholders from both companies approved the deal earlier in the week.
