IBM eases designer access to ASICs with deal for Artisan's platform

Austin, Texas - Designers targeting IBM silicon will have access to the memory generators, standard cells and I/O library of Artisan Components Inc. under a deal made public today. The agreement, the first of several planned moves to broaden access to IBM's ASIC manufacturing prowess, spans technology from quarter-micron to 90-nanometer design rules. Fram Akiki, director of foundry product offerings at IBM Microelectronics (East Fishkill, N.Y.), said the move will complement IBM's libraries and make the company's process technology more widely available. "This is a recognition that Artisan's platform is out in the industry, that many customers are designing on it," he said.
