Sun turns up heat on Java for next-gen wireless

San Francisco - Sun Microsys-tems will turn up the heat on Java as the unifying platform for next-generation wireless systems at its JavaOne conference here today. New handsets, a faster Java virtual machine, improvements that round out key software standards and free development tools all geared for mobile applications are on the front burner. Sun's efforts come as Microsoft, Palm, Qualcomm, embedded Linux and a host of other players vie for design wins in 2.5 and 3G cellular systems, a market still tiny but widely expected to become a significant new driver. Just in time for JavaOne, developers put out for public review a major update of the Java software standard for cellular systems. About 60 companies and people helped define the Mobile Information Device Profile (MJDP) 2.0, up from 22 who worked on the first iteration released in September 2000.
