Santa Cruz, Calif. —Steven Watkins, co-founder and president of Blue Pacific Computing Inc., has given up trying to sell HDL simulators. Instead, he's hawking a book that aims to make hardware design accessible and affordable for software engineers. Watkins' book, entitled Hardware Design for Software People in the SoC Era, includes content from classes he's currently teaching at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). It introduces software people to VHDL, Verilog, Sys-temVerilog and SystemC; lists free and low-cost design automation tools; and shows readers how to get started on FPGA design with a $99 development system.
