San Jose, Calif. — Agere Systems Inc. has announced a chip set for small-form-factor hard drives that merges very low power consumption with a balanced approach to integration. With TrueStore CE, Agere hopes to leverage its commanding market share in read-channel chips into a three-chip set that includes preamp and motor control chips—technologies in which Texas Instruments and others hold sway. Agere says that when used in tandem, the three chips consume less than 400 milliwatts total under normal operating conditions. Small drives pose big opportunities in the consumer-driven market. As many as 24 million 1.x-inch disk drives will be sold this year, driven by demand in MP3 players, said John K. Buttress, a storage research manager for International Data Corp.
