Some surprising insights were unearthed at last month's ISSCC evening panel titled, "Engineering Resources: Train, Buy, Rent, or Steal?" The discussion dealt with the the shortage of engineering talent. Panel chairperson David Robertson of Analog Devices Inc., Norwood, Mass., asked all six panelists the big question: Why is there a scarcity of resources? Specifically, the terms used in the session's title referred to four options—hiring from a college, acquiring a small company, retaining a design service and/or outside consultants, and finding talent through a headhunter.
