Sino-German Project on Dry-land Mega-city Environment Protection Kicks Off

In response to the initiation of a Sino-German research project on "Environmental Protection & Sustainable Development of Mega-cities (Urumqi-Changji) in an Arid Area," a seven-member delegation headed by Prof. Bernhard Eitel from Heidelberg University made a visit to the CAS Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG). On Nov. 9 2005, Prof. ZHANG Xiaolei, EGI director, held discussions with the German visitors on the cooperation of the project. As a key component of the Environmental Protection & Sustainable Development of Future Mega-cities sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education, the 11 -year and 10-million-euro research project will focus on such research topics as the recycling utilization of water resources, energy and wastes as well as human health.
